Admittedly, there is an east coast bias to this site. That’s due to the fact that most of the prep schools in the United States are located in the eastern part of the country.
New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) – This is easily the largest league in the country. It includes class AAA, AA, A, B, C and D. Class AAA is arguably the highest level of prep school basketball in the US.
Mid Atlantic Prep League (MAPL). The main league in the NJ/PA region. There are six schools in this league. Blair Academy, Hill School, The Hun School of Princeton, Lawrenceville School, Mercersburg Academy and Peddie School. The MAPL is arguably the best league-wide combination of academics and athletics in the US.
Friends Schools League (FSL) – The main league in the Philadelphia area. Fewer than 50% of these are boarding schools.
Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC)- The main league in the Washington DC area. There are six schools in this league. 50% of these are boarding schools.
Virginia – There are a couple of main leagues (VPL, VIC) in Virginia, but many of the top level athletic schools are independents. Therefore, grouping the Virginia schools by league doesn’t serve much of a purpose. The independents play national, rather than league, schedules. The best league-based schools annually schedule non-league games against the top independents.
Independent/Miscellaneous schools: There are many schools located throughout the country that are either independents or have a profile that’s much higher/inconsistent with the rest of their league.
Army prep and Navy prep. Technically, these are independents. They are listed separately because they are unique, somewhat unknown, underutilized and underrated. For the right students they are great options.
